Police, family, and workers outside the Broken Bend Ranch manor

A Haunting at Broken Bend Ranch

A Haunting at Broken Bend Ranch is a browser-playable supernatural mystery interactive fiction and classic text adventure. You play by typing commands. You are a detective called to an old East Texas cattle ranch after restoration workers uncover human remains hidden inside the manor house itself.

The property has been in the family a long time. The money to restore it came late. By the time serious work begins, the house is rotting, the grounds are only partly brought back, and too much history has been left sitting in dust, wood, plaster, and silence.

Then a crew tears out a wall in a back service room off the kitchen and opens a sealed chamber under the rear staircase. Inside are human remains. The ranch becomes a crime scene. The family closes ranks. The workers start talking. And the house may not be done giving up what it has kept hidden.

What it feels like

A slow, grounded investigation inside a decaying ranch manor where structure, family history, renovation work, and the supernatural all press against each other. You search rooms, question people, compare details, and keep pulling at what does not fit until the house and the case start answering back.

The wall has already been opened. > look Back service room. Old boards. Dust. Torn plaster. A jagged opening under the rear stairs where the crew started tear-out and then stopped cold. > inspect opening The cavity goes deeper than it should. This was not loose framing. Someone closed this space off on purpose. > shine light inside Lath, dirt, old fabric, and the shape of human remains folded into a place no one was meant to see. > ask foreman He keeps looking at the hole instead of you. "We thought it was bad rot," he says. "Then we saw bones." > listen Quiet house. Distant voices outside. One loose board ticking somewhere above you like the place is settling in around the truth.

About the story

You play as the detective brought to Broken Bend Ranch after the discovery of a concealed body inside the manor house. The property is inherited land, once a working cattle ranch, now only partly restored after years of decline and delayed access to family money. The house is under active repair when the case begins, which means every wall, room, account, and memory around you may matter.

The one thing that always stays fixed is the discovery site. The remains are found in a sealed under-stair chamber in a small back service room off the kitchen, exposed when workers tear out a failing wall. Beyond that, the case itself can change. The victim, the killer, the motive, the time period, and the deeper truth behind the crime are built to shift between runs.

The game blends mystery, exploration, and supernatural pressure. Some answers come from evidence, some from contradictions, and some from what the house itself refuses to leave buried. You are not just solving a murder. You are walking into a family property where the dead were hidden in the walls, and something in the place may still care who finds out why.
